YA Reading

I love reading, and growing up I never had my nose out of a book. Although now I don’t read novels nearly as much as I would like to, I’ve realised I do still read a lot. And so do my kids. Well, two of the three do anyway.
Munchkin is my non-reading child. He’s 14 and it has always been a chore to get him to pick up a book. I’ve tried different tacts over the years, but never with great success. So one of my challenges to myself with homeschooling was to encourage him to read. Weekly library visits and fortnightly book reports are on the agenda.
I’ve been keeping an eye out for books that might appeal to him, without a great deal of luck. The other week I visited the wonderful editormum, and left with a pile of (predominantly YA) books.
Not surprisingly, Ratbag (17) was thrilled and he has proceeded to vacuum them up.  The big surprise was Munchkin. He picked up Changeling by Sean Williams and is now on book 3 of the trilogy. He loves the world and the story, and for the first time ever, he’s excited to be reading! That means this is his third novel in three weeks! So yay! 🙂 Probably more than he reads in a year. (Thank you, ladnews! and Thank you, editormum
So if anyone has any suggestions along those lines, that would be really cool 🙂

The art of compromise.

“Hmm,” I said as I awoke this morning. “Today smells like a Chocolate Day!”

“But,” argued I, “Coffee would be good.”

“Indeed,” I nodded wisely. “I do make a compelling argument. I shall compromise.”

A new technique

One of my goals that I have been trying to achieve with decorating is to get this beautiful finish that you can do imprints on. There are gorgeous examples on the net, and while there are lots of tutorials everywhere, and people are willing to share some of their tricks, the actual covering of a cupcake didn’t seem to be that easy to discover. Now, it could just be that most people think it’s that easy you don’t need to be shown, but I have had a heck of a time working it out. I’ve tried

Anyway, after searching high and lo, and picking up hints from various blogs and tutorials, I think I’ve finally figured it out. Of course, I’ve got some refining to do – getting each cake nice and even, for a start, but it’s coming along.

The photos don’t really show it, but these are a deep purple colour. (And that was a challenge in itself 🙂 )
