Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur… (or how we got conned)

November 4, 2010 Ka'ela Ja'el

We are cat people. I’ve had cats pretty much all my life. So has Tusk. But for the past four years or so, our family has been minus a feline companion. Sadly, our cat, Miss Molly, was run over not long after moving up to Perth, and because we were renting at that stage, and looking to move into another rental, we decided it would be wise to hold off for a bit.

So we did.

And we have.

But, we’ve been missing having a cat around,  particularly in the last few months, so when the Cat Haven put out a call for foster carers a few months ago we thought it was a good opportunity to ease ourselves back into cat ownership. We did consider that part of the motive behind fostering might be that the CH hopes you fall in love and decide to keep your charge, but we decided we could live with that .

Except, I’m not sure how much ‘easing’ there was. Somehow, we got convinced to take TWO kitties…

Superfly

IMGA0526

and Mozart

IMGA0523

…because they’re best friends and HAD to go together.

Yeah, right!

They have worked out a system to tolerate each which involves them not being in the same room together.

Meanwhile, it’s been a little over a month and we have heard *nothing* from the Cat Haven, despite the assurances that they would call several times to ‘touch base’.

In the meantime though, we have somehow acquired a third kitty.

Meet Bella:

IMGA0520

She’s a 5 year old ragdoll. Her previous owner had gotten her, as a kitten, with papers, from a breeder. We were warned that she wasn’t an overly social cat, and that grooming her was a two person job because she really didn’t like it, however, they loved her but the husband’s allergies were progressively becoming worse, and it looked like their young toddler was also developing allergies, so regrettably, she had to go.

At least, that was the story we were told. And really, they seemed like lovely people, and we have no real reason to not believe it. Except, Bella is a very interesting cat.

Everything we’ve ever read and heard about ragdolls tells us that they have had their defence mechanisms practically bred out of them.

Sure, they do…

These were several days ago:

This was one swipe of her paw.

IMGA0528

And there’s quite a few scratches that haven’t shown up in the photo.

IMGA0527

Anyway, scratches aside, it’s her behaviour that is puzzling.

She growls, this deep, rumbly growl. It’s quite intimidating, actually. And if you brave through that and dare to approach her, she will hiss and launch forward at you. She was like that, fairly consistently, for the first couple of days. The first night she actually barred Tusk from our bedroom for a couple of hours. I was at work, and she wouldn’t let him through the door.

But then she has these moments, she will jump up and wants cuddles. Until she doesn’t. At which time she goes straight to the hissing and intimidating again. And sometimes she comes over like she wants a cuddle but then suddenly remembers that she is supposed to be aggressive, and will start with the hissing and spitting. She literally changes attitude in an instant, and then changes back again.

But she sleeps on the bed with me every night.

So I’m not convinced allergies were the entire reason for her being handed on. I think, somewhere in the past she has been mistreated, and not just once or twice. And so she has developed the spitting and hissing as a defence to keep people at bay, and the more effective it has been, the more she has done it. And that behaviour didn’t mix well with a toddler.

But she is improving ever day. Slowly becoming more social. She gets on better with Mozart than Supafly does. And she has let me brush her without any real issue. But I do have to choose my moments wisely.

Ouch. As one experienced in the ways of scratches and how disappointingly they photograph, you have my sympathies! Perhaps Bella has been “played with” a little too much over the years. I hope it works out for all.

Yay kitties! Good luck with all of them!!
It’s possible that Mozart and Supafly were best friends in the Haven – we had two previous kitties that were inseparable and then went through an 18 month period of not being able to be in the same room together. They’d been through a couple of changes by that point, but we’d been settled in the one address for a couple of months so it seemed odd. Perhaps something like that?
Good luck with Bella – it does sound as though she’s not had the easiest of times, however that’s happened. Glad your lovingness is making a difference for her though.

You remind me of my sister’s Ragdoll. He was a show cat. At about 6 months, he got Judge’s Pick one show (i.e. that judge’s best in show) so he was a decent cat, but he started getting grumpy. He’d do that rumbling growl thing at judges. He didn’t like being handled at home. So he had to go. Strange breed esp. as the general perception of them is docile 🙂
(Actually, you reminded me of my Jack Russell: she’d come over and try to get pats out of me, but didn’t like being touched. She’d wag and wiggle for total strangers so they’d pat her, and then snap at them. But she came home with me at 9 weeks old.)
